The 49ers have completely overhaul their roster during the entire duration of offseason as well as in their four preseason contest under their head, but this is truly the beginning of the new era. 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have been active in revamping both the team roster and the franchise’s organizational culture this 2017.

The San Francisco face a Carolina club that welcomes back the latter’s star quarterback Cam Newton to full commitment for the first time since the previous season. Newton underwent a shoulder repair surgery this summer, and only played limited snaps in the third exhibition contest. This will be his first battle of full snaps since the finish of the last season.

Newton got a number talented and skillful weapons added in running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Curtis Samuel, and they could end up competing at different times with the Niners rookies defensive end Solomon Thomas and linebacker Reuben Foster. We know that the latter player will be starting at a mediocre side of his position and getting a plethora of work.

The San Francisco 49ers likely will be stepping in the gridiron without free safety Jimmie Ward. The former Northern Illinois star spent the last month nursing from a hamstring injury, and is listed as IR list for the season opener. Meanwhile, tight end George Kittle is also listed as questionable due to he’s also dealing with his recovery from hamstring injury. Additionally, the defensive end Aaron Lynch is also questionable to participate in the matchup against the Panthers, as he’s recovering from back injury.

The San Francisco 49ers have embarked on a new path, led by first-year coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch. Shanahan and Lynch have overhauled the roster, and the revamped group will get its first test when they face the Carolina Panthers in the season opening game on Sunday (1:25 p.m. PT/4:25 p.m. ET, FOX, DirecTV).

Shanahan and Lynch cleaned house after the 49ers (2-14 in 2016) finished a dismal season in 2016. Shanahan has overhauled the offense and brought in quarterback Brian Hoyer. The offense struggled to score points in 2016 and Shanahan, the offensive coordinator of the high-scoring Atlanta Falcons in 2016, will try to improve the offense.

The defense was the worst in the NFL in 2016. The 49ers were particularly inept against the run last season. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh has implemented a 4-3 formation instead of the 3-4 used in 2016. Former Oregon stars DeForest Buckner and Arik Armstead anchor the defensive line.

The Panthers (6-10 in 2016) clearly suffered from the Super Bowl loser’s hangover last season after falling to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50. Quarterback Cam Newton did not play in the preseason while rehabbing from a shoulder surgery, but he’s expected to start Sunday. Rookie running back Christian McCaffrey will be featured as the Panthers try to remove some of the burden – and hits – off Newton.
